A dental crown, also referred to as a dental “cap,” is a tooth-shaped restoration that goes over an existing damaged tooth to restore its size, shape, and strength, and improve its overall look. Dental crowns are cemented into place and fully cover the entire portion of the tooth that is visible above the gum line, essentially covering up or “capping” it in order to restore its natural appearance and shape. Unlike fillings, dental crowns protect the tooth from biting force down the centre of the tooth, to prevent fracturing of the tooth.
Dental Crowns can be made from different materials, including all ceramic porcelain, Zirconia based porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, full cast metal, and traditional gold. Depending on different factors, including aesthetics, positioning within your mouth, dental habits such as teeth grinding, and your personal preference, a full assessment by your Neighbourhood Dental dentist will be needed in order to determine which material is appropriate for your situation.
